  • Administration on Developmental Disabilities Developmental disabilities are severe, chronic disabilities attributable to mental and/or physical impairment which manifest before age 22 and are likely to continue indefinitely. The major goal of the programs is a partnership with state governments, local communities, and the private sector to assist people with developmental disabilities to reach maximum potential through increased independence, productivity, and community integration. They address all elements of the life cycle: prevention; diagnosis; early intervention; therapy; education; training; employment; and community living and leisure opportunities.
  • Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law The Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law is a nonprofit legal advocacy organization based in Washington D.C. Our name honors the federal appeals court judge whose landmark decisions pioneered the field of mental health law, and our advocacy is based on the principle that every individual is entitled to choice and dignity. For many people with mental disabilities, this means something as basic as having a decent place to live, supportive services and equality of opportunity.

  • The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Provides information on VA programs, veterans benefits, VA facilities worldwide, and VA medical automation software. The VA WWW serves several major constituencies including the veteran and his/her dependents, Veterans Service Organizations, the military, the general public, and VA employees around the world. Internet mail is also available which allows veterans to make specific inquiries and receive official responses from VA staff. In addition to providing the full Federal Benefits Manual for Veterans and Dependents, press releases and announcements of interest to veterans, a listing of current job opportunities with the VA, many of the most requested benefit application and information forms are now available to through this Server.
  • Disability and Business Technical Assistance Centers (DBTACs) Ten regional DBTACs answer technical questions, make referrals, and disseminate federally-approved information and materials. In addition, the DBTACs perform a wide range of activities to promote public awareness of the ADA. The DBTACs provide ADA training and technical assistance to covered individuals and entities in order to facilitate employment for individuals with disabilities and accessibility in public accommodations and government services.
  • disAbility.gov July 26, 2000, marks the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. In celebration of this milestone, the Presidential Task Force on Employment of Adults with Disabilities created this site, to provide one-stop online access to resources, services, and information available throughout the Federal government.
  • Medicaid Medicaid is a jointly-funded, Federal-State health insurance program for certain low-income and needy people. It covers approximately 36 million individuals including children, the aged, blind, and/or disabled, and people who are eligible to receive federally assisted income maintenance payments.
  • National Association of Protection and Advocacy Systems Federally mandated system in each state and territory which provides protection of the rights of persons with disabilities through legally based advocacy. P&As were established to address public outcry in response to the abuse, neglect and lack of programming in institutions for persons with disabilities. Congress has created distinct statutory programs to address the needs of different populations of persons with disabilities.
  • National Council on Disability (NCD) NCD is an independent federal agency making recommendations to the President and Congress on issues affecting 54 million Americans with disabilities. NCD's overall purpose is to promote policies, programs, practices, and procedures that guarantee equal opportunity for all individuals with disabilities, regardless of the nature or severity of the disability; and to empower individuals with disabilities to achieve economic self-sufficiency, independent living, and inclusion and integration into all aspects of society.
  • National Women’s Health Information Center (NWHIC) Today's modern woman has a multitude of roles and responsibilities: caregiver, wife, mother, employee, friend, and volunteer, among others.   • President's Committee on Mental Retardation (PCMR) The PCMR acts in an advisory capacity to the President and the Secretary of Health and Human Services on matters relating to programs and services for people with mental retardation. It evaluates the adequacy of current practices and programs for people with mental retardation. PCMR also coordinates federal agency activities in mental retardation, highlights the need for appropriate changes, promotes research, and promotes the training of people who provide direct support services to persons with mental retardation.

  • The American Foundation for the Blind "American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), a U.S. nonprofit organization enabling blind or visually impaired people to achieve equality and access. Provides information and referrals about living with visual impairment. Helen Keller devoted over 40 years of her life to AFB."
  • AMERICAN DISABLED for ATTENDANT PROGRAMS TODAY (ADAPT) Nationally ADAPT focuses on promoting services in the community instead of warehousing people with disabilities in institutions and nursing homes. Attendant services (help with things like eating, dressing, toileting, moving from wheelchair to bed, etc.) are the cornerstone to community based services for people with severe disabilities. ADAPT is working to get 25% of the Medicaid long term care funds redirected to pay for a national, mandated attendant services program.

  • The National Center on Accessibility (NCA) Located at Indiana University's Bradford Woods, NCA provides technical assistance to organizations of all sizes who are designing and retrofitting their leisure areas and programs for accessibility. The NCA conducts, promotes, and facilitates research on issues essential to accessibility. This research shapes instruction for the nationally renowned NCA education programs conducted at the Center and throughout the United States.   • National MS Society For more than 55 years, the National MS Society has been one thing people with MS can count on: on a personal level and in the public arena. In 1946 -- before advocacy was a household word -- the National MS Society began advocating for people with multiple sclerosis. Our first victory came four years later: in 1950 Congress established the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Work at NINDS impacts millions of Americans and it receives over $650 million in federal funds annually. Nearly $60 million of that money goes directly to MS research.
  • Our-Kids Our-Kids is a "Family" of parents, caregivers and others who are working with children with physical and/or mental disabilities and delays. We call the list "Our-Kids". While it isn't exactingly descriptive, it avoids the pitfalls of labeling our kids anything but what they most certainly are: The wonderful little people in our lives. The Our-Kids list consist of over 800 people representing children of varying diagnosis; everything from indefinite developmental delays and sensory integration problems, to cerebral palsy, to rare genetic disorders.   • THE RICK HANSEN INSTITUTE the "Rick Hansen Institute" was founded by Rick Hansen in partnership with the University of British Columbia. Our mission is to find a cure for paralysis and to improve lifestyle for persons with disabilities. The site also tells of Rick's historic journey around the world in a wheelchair including an interactive map. MOST IMPORTANT: we give out millions of dollars in research and rehabilitation grants.
  • Spinal Cord Injury: A Medical, Rehabilitative, and General Approach This site also looks at the effects of alcohol, especially as it applies to drinking and driving.
